‘I could go bust’ from roadworks

By Alex Jones in Business

A WORRIED coffee shop owner said he is concerned his business may “go bust” due to roadworks which he says are threatening his livelihood.

Over the next few weeks, Dolgellau residents face a series of road closures as gas and water pipes are replaced throughout the town.

Jeff Owen, owner of Dolgellau Coffee Shop, said that although he appreciates the upgrading work “has to be done”, the roadworks outside his shop could not have come at a worse time.

“We have three weeks of work at the moment on Lion Street as they replace the gas pipe,” Mr Owen told the Cambrian News.

“Following that we’re going into another phase where all the water pipes are being replaced.

“Unfortunately, the bank holiday and half term fall smack bang in that phase and that’s money I can’t afford to lose - the schools are off, families and walkers are all out, it’s one of the most important times of the year for us.

“We closed over winter for a refurbishment so we were depending on this money to keep us afloat, I’ll go bust if people can’t get to my shop.

“I’ve not known anything like it in 16 years, it’s a grave concern.”

Wales & West Utilities said the work is essential to keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses, that they work hard to keep disruption to a minimum, but that local traders who feel their business has been adversely affected can apply for compensation.
